Christmas Drinks and Social Etiquette

Babatunde Ojo – Client Relationship Manager

As a Client Relationship Manager, there is a misconception that all I do is wine and dine clients all day every day and am constantly eating in expensive restaurants and living the high life.  While I occasionally get the opportunity to do that, the reality is that I spend most of my days sitting in the various coffee shops across the square mile talking to Senior IT managers about budgets (or lack thereof) and the inability to hire anyone.

That being said, we are entering that period of the year where it is seen as the norm to spend each Thursday and Friday at some kind of drinking/eating establishment and making the most of any free nights that may be on offer… Christmas! I know that is a filthy word to mention but at the time of writing there are only 59 days until it is upon us once again. However, given the economic climate, is expecting a Christmas party allowed or will they be seen as a lavish expense? Have the days of boozy evenings at the directors’ expense with all manner of shenanigans happening a thing of the past? Are we all too concerned that a drunken passing comment could lead to a one way ticket to HR the very next day amidst complaints of lewd comments?? Personally I think that maybe letting our hair down is just what the city needs. I’m not saying that the fear of losing one’s job is something to be taken lightly, however I do feel that maybe, just maybe, everyone has started taking themselves a little too seriously. After all, as the carol goes, ‘Tis the season to be jolly’.

Having a few drinks doesn’t give people the excuse to behave like idiots but I do think it’s time we all started having some fun again. If you feel the same then no doubt you may run into me in some kind of drinking establishment over the next 59 days, wining and dining, having some fun and maybe making one inappropriate comment too many… HR here I come.
